Instagram, a popular photo based social network snapped up by Facebook Inc. would roll out advertising in the US. This would be done through a bid that Instagram labeled as a "sustainable business". This was according to a blogpost from the photo based social network on Thursday.
Instagram said that the transition would be delicate as its 150 million users had not been used in seeing ads peppering photo streams of family and vacations. Instagram acknowledged that its users could be alienated by the effort.
According to an Instagram blogpost, "Seeing photos and videos from brands you don't follow will be new, so we'll start slow. If you see an ad you don't like, you'll be able to hide it and provide feedback about what didn't feel right. We're relying on your input to help us continually improve the Instagram experience."
Research firm eMarketer said that advertisers spend close to USD10 billion on social network ads worldwide this year. Instagram would be the latest addition to social media network to turn to advertising to capitalize on its millions of global users.
