The largest telecommunications operator in Germany is now pushing to shield online traffic from spies. This was to be done through the routing of data through domestic connections, according to Deutsche Telekom last Saturday.
After revelations of spying by US entities on private messages of German citizens, the company said it would only channel local email traffic through servers located within Germany.
The company seeks to enter into agreements with other internet providers for data to be coursed through them would not leave the borders of Germany, according to a spokesperson of Deutsche Telekom.
The spokesperon said, "In a next step, this initiative could be expanded to the Schengen area." The Schengen area is a group of 26 European countries that have merged immigration controls.
