According to a Dow Jones Venture Source report, US venture capital activity in the technology sector went up in the third quarter this year.
US-based technology companies was able to raise USD8.1 billion in total investments from 806 deals. The number might have indicated the increased trust by firms in technology assets, as the figures show a 2% increase in capital and 4% decrease in the number of deals from the previous quarter. Compared with the numbers from the same period last year, capital raised was a 4% increase, but the number of deals were down 10%.
As per industry group, Information Technology was number one with deals made in the third quarter at 246 and had raised USD2.3 billion. Business and Financial Services and Healthcare placed second and third respectively with USD2.2 billion by 195 deals raised and USD1.8 billion in investments committed in 164 deals.
Google Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz were seen as the top three active investors during the period. Mergers and acquisitions increased by 11% as compared with the previous quarter, garnering USD9.7 billion in 111 deals.
25 companies went public in the third quarter this year and had raised USD2.2 billio total. The largest IPOs for the quarter were FireEye and Violin Memory.
