Today, The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Worldwide had disclosed its plans to relaunch some of its existing offerings. The media company also said it would be offering a new content brand in the next few months. BBC Worldwide is a wholly-owned commercial operations subsidiary of BBC. It is also one of the major income-generating arms of the oldest national broadcasting organization in the world.
The new BBC Earth and BBC First would be introduced to their respective markets starting 2014. The revamp would have BBC pledging GBP200 million in investments to produce premium content. BBC Earth would be the UK media corporation's consumer brand for all kinds of factual content. BBC First would be creating premium drama content and high-quality British programming content. The new brand would be launched shortly in the next few months.
BBC Worldwide chief executive Tim Davie said, "Taken together, these three investment priorities will serve to grow the BBC's footprint across the world, both via our own services and our important third party sales, resulting in greater access by audiences to BBC and British content and sustainable cash flows back to the BBC."
In its 2011/2012 annual report, BBC reported income of GBP5.086 billion. Its primary means of income is via television licenses at a total GBP3.6 million. A UK household spends GBP145.50 annually on television license since April 2010. BBC only earned GBP1.1 billion from its commercial businesses.
