Samsung Electronics Co had issued an apology to Chinese consumers after the country's national broadcaster criticized the South Korean conglomerate for manufacturing handsets that fail because of faulty memory chips. Samsung included in the apology pledged to provide free maintenance for seven models included in the China Central Television report.
The world's largest smartphone maker also extended the warranties over the handsets made prior to November 30, 2013 by another year. This was announced through a statement posted on Samsung China's website.
According to CCTV's 'Economic Half-Hour', Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series handsets had crashed as many as 30 times in a given day. The program identified the issue as memory chip failures which needed upgrades.
This is the fifth in the series of highly critical documentaries done by the state backed television show on the mistreatment by foreign companies of local consumers in the world's second largest economy. Other companies that have been featured include Apple Inc, Danone, Volkswagen AG and Starbucks Corp.
