American and Brazilian authorities are determining whether Embraer SA had bribed Dominican Republic officials for the grant of a USD90 million contract for attack planes for the country's armed forces. According to a Wall Street Journal, the said report had cited law enforcement documentation as well as people with direct knowledge of the case.
The world's third largest commercial plane manufacturer had been under investigation by the US Justice Department as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission. The investigations commenced in 2010 and this is the first time a Brazilian company was included in the corruption investigation.
As stated in documents read by the Wall Street Journal, the US regulatory authorities had said they have accumulated evidence, consisting of bank records and emails, as proof of Embraer officials approving a USD3.4 million bribe made to a Dominican official with influential ties in military procurement.
Officials of Embraer were not available for any comment beyond regular business hours.
