Tropical Storm Sonia increased speed and threatened Mexico with intense rains. Reuters reported that the rains could affect the western portion of Mexico which had been hit with flooding in September. Sonia was spotted 115 miles south of Los Cabos in the southern part of Baja California. The US National Hurricane Center's latest advisory forecasted Sonia to reach the mainland coast either on the evening of Sunday or early Monday. NHC added that the storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and was going 14 miles per hour north-northeast.

In September, Tropical Storm Ingrid and Hurricane Manuel damaged Mexico. According to a report from The Independent, the storms caused the death of 123 people. An estimated 59,000 people had to be evacuated from their homes. Mexico's agriculture ministry said about 1.5 million acres of farmland were completely lost because of the storm. Mexican President Pena Nieto and Congress also proposed changes to the 2014 budget to increase the funds for disaster spending. The budget had MXN 12 billion or GBP 585 million in emergency funds available.
