SF-based mobile payment and carrier billing provider, Boku, a combination of former startups Paymo and Mobillcash, makes its first historical acquisition by purchasing India's largest carrier billing company, Quebecell. Literally opening Middle East and Asian markets in one move.
As of the moment, the terms of the deal has not been disclosed. But with over 800 million subscribers in India alone, Quebecell certainly gives Boku a solid platform to work on with Quebecell already doing deals with the top four mobile networks in India. Boku will also be able to harness Quebecell's engineering talents opening up more opportunities further along the way.
With such a combination, Boku will become India's largest billing provider with the aim of becoming a centralized hub where they can also penetrate the Middle East and Asian markets giving them a wider global reach.
Initially, India has a very low credit card penetration about 11 million as of today, which means that it is an emerging market full of opportunities for carrier billing on purchasing digital content such as music, apps, ringtones etc. So with all that being said, Boku is now in a position where it needs to be: global in scope.
