Chicago startup Retrofit Inc. has raised $5 million in new venture funding to take on Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and other corporate wellness programs in the US that focus on weight loss.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Retrofit is working with corporations to help overweight employees shed pounds and develop healthy habits using Web, mobile and wearable technology.
Among Retrofit's clients include Internet giant Google Inc., cloud computing company Salesforce.com Inc. and the American Medical Association, the report said.
Retrofit's service includes wireless monitoring of a client's weight, activity and sleep. The fitness company also offers personal sessions via Skype video conferencing with its employees who are registered dietitians, exercise physiologists and other behavioral therapists, WSJ said.
Cambia Health Solutions Inc. led the series B investment in Retrofit, joined by the startup's earlier investor Draper Fisher Jurvetson. The new round of funding brings the company's total venture capital raised to $15.7 million. Cambia is the parent company of Regence, the largest health insurer in the Northwestern US, the report said.
