Palo Alto Networks purchases cyber security startup Morta Security

Security firm Palo Alto Networks has bought stealth cyber security startup Morta Security for an undisclosed amount, TechCrunch reported. Although financial terms of the transaction were not given, the report said Morta Security was able to secure more than $1 million from its backers Andreessen Horowitz, Data Collective, Greylock Partners, Norwest Venture Partners, Larry Link and Peter Wagner. This is the first acquisition of Palo Alto Networks.

For the past year, Morta has been in stealth and did not provide details about its product. However, TechCrunch reported that the startup has been developing new technology that would be able to counter advanced threats in cyber security. According to the report, Morta works on the premise that a break in traditional layered network defense occurs and that their product will be able to prevent advanced attackers from undertaking more complicated hacks.

From their experience in the NSA, the US Air Force and others, the Morta team brings to Palo Alto Networks an interesting set of skills and extensive expertise, the report said. Palo Alto Networks said the purchase of Morta will aid the company's WildFire threat protection offerings. It will also help them develop fresh toolsets that will speed up detection of sophisticated cyber threats as well as pave the way for advanced protection capabilities for the customers of Palo Alto Networks enterprise security platform.

Palo Alto Founder and CTO Nir Zuk told TechCrunch that a new generation of threats is being faced by enterprise networks where little protections are available for more sophisticated attacks. Morta Security Chief Executive Officer said their technology seeks to address the detection of these third generation attacks.

In a statement about the deal, Shah said, "Palo Alto Networks has a successful history of disrupting the network security landscape with its unique offerings. The Morta team is excited to work with the clear leaders in this space and we look forward to joining the company and contributing to future highly innovative technology leadership."
