Vimeo purchases video-making app Cameo

By

Vimeo purchased Cameo, VentureBeat reported. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Cameo is an iOS app that allows users to create their own videos which became popular in November after being named as one of the top applications last year, receiving accolades from Apple's Editor's Choice and iTunes. It provides basic tools that enable users to edit their videos, including the capacity to put in title cards, the power to add video filters for recording and putting together video from different cameras. Established in New York last year, Cameo was previously able to secure a seed funding round from Great Oaks Venture Capital, the report said.

In the statement, Vimeo Chief Executive Officer Kerry Trainor said, "Vimeo is committed to empowering all creators, and the ubiquity of HD camera phones is driving the largest wave of video creation ever seen. What we love about Cameo is that it gives even novice video-makers the power to create beautiful, well-crafted videos."

With the acquisition, the team at Cameo will then work under Andrew Pile, the Chief Technology Officer of Vimeo. Meanwhile, Cameo Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Rosenberg will then become Vice President, Cameo, the statement said.

The purchase of Cameo shows Vimeo still firmly intent on providing user-generated video content on its platform. Vimeo has been rather busy recently. The year has just opened but it has already substantially upgraded its HTML 5 video player and invested $10 million to get the exclusive rights to distribute indie movies online. In addition, it has also launched a major update to its platform called Vimeo on Demand which enables content creators to sell or rent their online work, the statement said.

Rosenberg said in the statement, "Vimeo to us is the benchmark of quality for video platforms and communities. We're excited about what our shared vision can create in further developing the app."
