Google will reportedly switch from Nexus 7 to an 8-inch slate in the form of Nexus 8. Whereas previous reports only dealt with rumors and predictions, it appears a changelog from the Android Open Source Project (ASOP) suggests that Google has been working on the Nexus 8 already. The device will be released alongside the Android TV according to recent information.
Google has always followed a naming tradition for its Nexus program. The internet giant has always used sea creature names to label its Nexus devices. For instance, the company named the Nexus 4 as Mako, the Nexus 10 as Manta and the Nexus 5 as the Hammerhead. The first and second generations Nexus 7 were named Grouper and Razor respectively.
The Android 4.4.3 changelog released through the Android Open Source Project listed a device labeled Flounder. The device was also listed under HTC. This supports the idea that Google has paired up with HTC to develop its next 8-inch tablet.
According to website Myce, after initial sightings of a device listed as Flounder spawned deeper investigation on the matter. According to a senior member from XDA Developers thread, there were more device references found in the source code for Android. Although the source code does not offer more information about the specs of the device, it does support the idea that Google has been working on an 8-inch tablet.
The spotted changelog features a line saying "project device/htc/flounder." People can expect more details about the 8-inch tab soon. According to analysts, Google decided to venture into the 8-inch industry to explore a new business potential. The 7-inch market has been saturated with competitors; the internet giant wants to take advantage of a much less exploited sector.
The company will also be holding its Google I/O Conference in June. People should get more information about upcoming products and services during the event.
