Apple's iCloud Drive Challenges Dropbox and Google

By

Apple's next big event finally materialized as the Worldwide Developers Conference commenced finally. As with previous reports, the company did unveil its iOS 8 giving way for more features. Part of the company's big reveal was also the iCloud Drive. With a similar format as with the Dropbox and Google's Drive, analysts think the Apple is heading its way to competing against Google and Dropbox. Can the tech giant play against these old favorites?

According to a report by The Wire, the iCloud Drive assigns a folder for all the apps of the user. The user can then access these apps through Finder. The main advantaege of iCloud Drive is that people can sync it with Windows, iOS and OS X. Those using an older version of the Mac and does not have iCloud can still use the system. They can sync their content and access them throughout other devices.

The report also noted how Apple's previous CEO wanted to compete against Dropbox. Steve Jobs had envisioned Apple's own Dropbox version although it may be quite late for the tech giant. Industry observers believe cost may be an issue. Despite the decreasing price, Google Drive and Dropbox may still be able to offer a more affordable option even just slightly. According to Apple, users can get 5GB free while they have to pay extra 99 cents if they want 20GB more.

This is a huge step already as Apple previously offered 50GB for $8 monthly. However, it is still no match for the 100GB $1.99 monthly offer by Google. As for the iOS 8, the new operating system promises to bring more features to the table. According to Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi as quoted by The Wall Street Journal:

"iOS 8 offers simpler, faster and more intuitive ways to use your device with incredible new features like iCloud Photo Library, a new Messages app, the QuickType keyboard and an entirely new Health app."
