The US House of Representatives left legislation on medical marijuana in individual states. The federal government is holding off responsibility on state marijuana medical laws. According to American Livewire, legislators who are for marijuana use are pleased now that the bill has been cleared in the House of Representatives.
This move of the House has been summarized in an amendment authored by representatives Dana Rohrabacher and Sam Farr.
Representative Sam Farr stated the purpose of the amendment by stating: "This is essentially saying, look, if you are following state law, you are a legal resident doing your business under state law, the feds just can't come in and bust you and bust the doctors and bust the patient."
In the same report, it is revealed that 22 states including Washington, D.C. have already set up laws to legalize medical use of marijuana. This is also supported by the results of the Pew Research study that revealed 73% of Americans favor the use of marijuana medical purposes.
One of the new states that approved the legalization of medical marijuana is New York, according to a report from The New York Times. The legislation allows the possession of marijuana by any certified seriously ill patient up to two and a half ounces of it.
Medical marijuana legalization of the same nature is also being worked on in three other states namely, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. For every state, there's a totally different set of requirements for a person to be allowed for medical marijuana use, a report in the American Livewire stated.
Further on, it was stated in the same report that some states like Minnesota allow only those who are seriously ill to purchase marijuana pills, vapor, and oils but they are prohibited from smoking it. California is more lax allowing possession of up to 8 ounces of marijuana and more illnesses to cure for it.
