There is little doubt that Group G of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil is the most dangerous of them all. The Group D features two Football titans in Germany and Portugal, ranked 2 and 3 in the world by FIFA respectively, who are in a clash for football supremacy, and a determined and resilient Ghana team who are out to prove that they belong in the biggest stage of them all. For team USA, they could not be in tighter spot.
So what are the chances of USA surviving the infamous group G of this year's World Cup? Well, after drawing into "group of death," the odds of United States Men's National Team (USMNT), winning in Brazil plummeted to 100-1, according to majority of sports books monitored by Odds Shark. It could seem like a long summer with an early exit for USA at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Things haven't also been looking good for the Americans lately. They have been the center of much debate and discussion in recent days thanks heavily to Klinsmann's decision to cut Landon Donovan, the most brilliant scorer football in America has produced, from his squad. And although veteran Clint Dempsey is still in the team, mediocre performances--a draw with Scotland and an upset to Ukraine and Austria--leading up to the tournament have raised questions on whether USA has what it takes to advance in the group stage of the World Cup.
Aside from a heavily loaded German squad and a Portuguese team led by one-man-team and football sensation Christian Ronaldo, team USA cannot sleep on a dangerous Ghana team, which appears to be its kryptonite--Ghana enters the tournament 2-0 against USA in two previous World Cup meetings--in order to advance in the group stages. The Americans are also entering their group-stage match againts Ghana as the clear underdogs.
But there is still plenty of hope for the American squad thanks to its unbelievably deep crop of talent and dynamic manager Jurgen Klinsmann. With Jurgen in the helm, USMNT has reached another level of football, with better depth and mental toughness.
And while many are predicting an early exit for the american squad, USA has enjoyed a considerable amount of success against the two powerhouses in Group G. USA managed to defeat Germany 4-3 in a 2013 friendly game in front of over 47,000 fans at a sold-out RFK Stadium. The victory marked the end to a three-game losing streak against Germany. The Americans have also won the previous two outings against the Portuguese.
Even Chelsea manager and Yahoo global football ambassador Jose Mourinho believes that the Americans have a chance to advance in the group stages of the tournament stating that he is afraid for Portugal (where he's from) against the United States.
Indeed, only time will tell if whether or not USA will be able to survive the infamous Group Death and advance in the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
