Tracy Morgan now more responsive, but remains in critical condition after New Jersey car crash

Actor/comedian Tracy Morgan remains in a critical condition but has shown improvements after a deadly vehicle collision in New Jersey.

Morgan was severely injured after a deadly car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Mercer County. It happened at around 1am ET on Saturday, when his limo van was hit by a tractor trailer.

"NJSP says the driver of the tractor-trailer failed to observe slow-moving traffic ahead ... At the last minute, he swerved to try and avoid the Mercedes limo bus but struck it from behind, forcing the limo to rotate and overturn," said Gregory Williams of the New Jersey State Police.

Morgan's mentor and fellow comic James "Jimmy Mack" McNair, was killed in the crash. Two other passengers--comedians Ardie Fuqua and Harris Stanton--were also injured and are in critical condition.

The "30 Rock" star suffered broken leg bones, nose, femur, and ribs. Morgan's spokesman Lewis Kay said that he is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks.

"His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans," Kay added.

Tyron Gale, the limo's driver, told reporters that during the crash, he heard Morgan screaming for help. "I climbed up on the body of the limo bus... but I couldn't reach them."

The truck driver, 35-year-old Kevin Roper, has already turned himself in, confirmed police. He has also already been charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. He was released on Sunday after posting a $50,000 bail, and will face arraignment early this week.

It has been confirmed that Roper works for Walmart. "This is a tragedy, and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved," said Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart U.S.

"The facts are continuing to unfold. If it's determined that our truck caused the accident, Walmart will take full responsibility," Simon added.
