Scientist Dr. Grace Augustine, Sigourney Weaver's character in "Avatar," died in in battle in the last film, but it has recently been confirmed that the actress will be back in Pandora, but this time as a different character.
Three sequels to the epic science fiction film have been confirmed, the first of which will reportedly start filming this year.
James Cameron, who started working with Weaver in 1985 in "Aliens," said in a statement: We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels."
"Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she's playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We're both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration," he added.
The 64-year-old Weaver, who is expected to portray a new na'vi character (although Cameron hasn't said anything about this yet), also confirmed the news, saying that nobody dies in science fiction. She told reporters that Cameron has already told her the stories for the upcoming movies--"I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful and there's a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them."
Cast members for Avatar 2 include Zoe Saldana (Neytiri), Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), and Stephen Lang (Miles Quaritch). Lang's character also died in the original movie, but he will reportedly play a revitalized version of his character this time around.
Avatar 2 is expected to open in December 2016, followed by Avatar 3 in December 2017, and Avatar 4 in December 2018.
