Man pays $20,000 to be 'killed' by George R.R. Martin in books

A new character in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire," the book series on which the hit TV series "Game of Thrones" is based, will soon appear in one of the books.

His name is David Goldblatt, and like many Martin characters, he will face a violent, brutal death.

The character came about after Goldblatt, a Facebook employee, donated $20,000 in Martin's Wolf Sanctuary campaign. In an interview, he said: "Obviously, the money is going to charity, so it's an added bonus. I didn't immediately seek to help wolf sanctuaries, but the more I read about the charities, I learned it was a worthwhile cause," he added.

Martin earlier said that he is raising money for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and The Food Depot of Santa Fe.

The award-winning author explained that by donating to the campaign, donors will get the chance to fly to meet him in Santa Fe, and have a helicopter ride to the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that houses wolves and wolf-dogs.

"In addition to touring the Sanctuary together, we'll also have plenty of time to discuss the show, A Song of Ice and Fire, direwolves - and if there's anything you have ever wanted to ask me, here's your chance!" the author added.

Some of the smaller prizes include items like shirts and signed maps. Those who can shell out over $4,500 will get a signed copy of the script for the first episode/first season of the show; and those who will give $7,500 will get one of the author's hats.

It gets better--and more expensive. For a donation of 15,000, the donor will get the chance to have breakfast with the author; and for a whopping $20,000--the amount that Goldblatt donated--will be killed in a "grisly" manner in one of the upcoming books (and having the chance to choose their social statues in Westeros--"lordling, knight, peasant, whore, lady, maester, septon").

Meanwhile, the "Game of Thrones" season 4 finale will air on June 15, 2014, at 9pm E.T. on HBO. Creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss promise that it will be the show's best finale yet.
