After loosing their bid to Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and most recently, Dwight Howard, it is clear that the Dallas Mavericks have not been so lucky in free agency the past few years. But if Carmelo Anthony wishes to undergo the courting process of the upcoming 2014 NBA Free agency then Mark Cuban should be able to offer him plenty of it.
None the less, the Dallas Mavericks have a real shot at acquiring Melo as they enter the free-agency market with an adequate cap room necessary to bring the Knicks forward to Big D. And although sources close to Anthony have pointed the Chicago Bulls and the Houston Rockets as the top teams in Anthony's free-agency list, the two teams have a lot of salary-cap room issues to deal with.
The Bulls have to amnesty Boozer first and move Taj Gibson to another team if they want to make enough salary-cap room for Melo. The Rockets meanwhile, have to find a suitable suitor for Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin if they want to offer Melo a near-max contract. The top two teams in Melo's wish list, therefore, have a lot of difficult moves to do first to make room for Melo.
Dallas meanwhile only has to renounce the right of free agents Vine Carter and Shawn Marion to make room for a max deal for Melo. Dirk has also made it clear in the past that he is willing to take a significant discount if it means bringing in another star to the Mavericks. And when Dirk comes of the books this coming summer, Dallas maybe able to manage to offer Anthony a max contract even with Vince Carter on the roster.
Dirk also loves the idea of having Anthony in Dallas saying: "If Carmelo would really love to come here, we'd love to have him," Nowitzki said Sunday in an interview on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.
Since April of this year, Dallas has always been one of the prospect suitors for Anthony. They also nearly upset the NBA champion Spurs - leading the Spurs by 3-2 before losing the next two games - and they maybe just one star away from contending again. However, if the Knicks foresee Anthony going to Dallas, they may be forced to make a sign-and-trade with the Bulls or Rockets to get something in return for their Super Star.
