Power Rangers movie reboot: Cast updates

It's Morphin' Time!

More details on the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" reboot are surfacing.

There have been talks that Taylor Lautner ("Twilight") and Liam Hemsworth ("The Hunger Games") have been tapped for the role of the Red Ranger. Other possible cast members include Chloe Grace Moretz, Jack Gleeson, and Liam Neeson.

Rumors are also going around that Max Landis ("Chronicle") has been asked to write the script.

None of these have been confirmed yet, but it gives fans--especially those who grew up in the 90s--something to look forward to. It looks like things are slowly shaping up.

Here are some fan ideas for cast members.

The announcement of new live action feature film was made in May by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer and Power Rangers producer Haim Saban.

"Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level," said Saban. "They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from 'The Hunger Games' to 'Twilight' and 'Divergent.'"

Feltheimer also expressed his excitement for the reboot, adding: "The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever."

Saban first produced the first Power Rangers movie in 1995 ("Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie"), which starred some of the original TV cast members like Amy Jo Johnson (Pink Ranger) and David Yost (Blue Ranger). This was followed by "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" in 1997.

Despite being a TV favorite, the existing Power Rangers movies didn't really do well in the box office--the 1995 film earned only $66 million, and the 1997 film only took home $9 million. Will the new franchise suffer the same fate? Keep an eye out for more announcements!
