Jerry Bruckheimer talks about 'Top Gun 2' plot

It looks like "Top Gun 2," the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic, is in the works.

The movie's producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that the movie will feature Tom Cruise--who is expected to reprise his role of LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell--versus drones.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones," Bruckheimer told Huffpost Live. "Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

The idea of a sequel for the American action drama has been lingering for quite some time now. Years ago, Paramount tapped Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to work on it, but these were put on hold after Scott's tragic suicide in 2012.

It has not yet been confirmed if anyone has officially signed up for the film, but Cruise gave an update on the movie in March, saying that he and Bruckheimer are working on it. "If we can figure it out, it'll be a lot of fun," he told Access Hollywood.

Cruise added: "I'd like to get back in those jets if we could figure the story out."

Bruckheimer also said in the interview that they have been trying to make the movie for three decades. "I think we're getting closer and closer ... Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it," he added.

"Top Gun" was the highest-grossing film of 1986, earning up to over $353,000 internationally. Some of the awards that it has won includes a 1987 Oscar for Best Music and Original song for "Take My Breath Away," and Best Pop Instrumental Performance in the 1986 Grammys.
