2014 NBA Free Agent updates: Kyle Lowry expressing interrest in going to the Miami Heat

By

Kyle Lowry was a central part in the Toronto Raptor's success last season. And after helping the Raptors reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008, Lowry has been widely perceived by many as a Raptor for life. Lowry, however, thinks otherwise as it has been reported that the point guard has expressed interest in joining the Miami Heat.

The Miami Heat have likewise expressed interest in the Raptors guard--who would be a significant improvement at the point position over Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole. Its also important to note that the Heat's point guard position was a glaring weakness during their finals series against the Spurs. The inability of Cole and Chalmers to guard Tony Parker and score the ball consistently gave a heavy toll on LeBron's minutes.

Bleacher Report's Stephen Babb, though, noted that landing someone like Lowry may be easier said than done.

"First, Miami is well over the salary cap, leaving it with only a mid-level exception to acquire additional talent. That exception may be better-used restocking the bench by acquiring a shooter or two. Second, there aren't very many good free-agent point guards available, especially if you're looking for someone who's actually a step up from Chalmers," he said. "Mo Williams may be on the market. Ramon Sessions could probably be had on the cheap. But it would be hard to argue either of those guys is a clear improvement over Chalmers."

The Heat's Big Three in James, Bosh, and wade, however, can opt-out with their current contracts and resign with significantly lesser salaries to make room for Lowry. That would be a possible scenario if the Miami Heat are really looking to make a significant upgrade in their point guard position. But even with such a scenario, it would take a lot of planning and tinkering in the Heat's front office to bring Lowry to the Heat with the Big Three intact--and with reasonable contracts.

Lowry will surely be able to land a big contract after a decent outing with the Raptors but it maybe a contract that the Heat simply wont be able to provide.
