George RR Martin's "Game of Thrones" Fan Turns "Yo" App into "Yo, Hodor"

By

A "Game of Thrones" fan has just put an entirely new spin on the popular "Yo" app- creating his own, called "Yo, Hodor."

The original "Yo," which has launched into a startling success recently (recieving $1M in seed capital in the previous month) allows users to send the word "yo" to other users with the same app. No other words or messages can be sent- only "yo."

Tyler Hedrick, the fan responsible for "Yo, Hodor," is an avid "Game of Thrones" fan with a fondness for Hodor, the gentle giant who can only say his own name, portrayed by Irish actor Kristian Nairn. Hedrick took it upon himself to re-brand the "Yo" app with a "Game of Thrones" feel, changing the available usernames to have a "Thrones" theme, and swapping out the word "Yo" with "Hodor," the one word the character can say.

The app also uses the likeness and the voice of actor Nairn, with a short sound clip of him speaking "Hodor" that plays when each Hodor is sent. According to Hedrick, he did not obtain permission from HBO (or the "Yo" app) to use Nairn's footage, but doubts that either company will pursue legal action.

Hedrick announced the new app over Twitter, exclaiming: "I wrote an app called Hodor because Hodoring someone is so much cooler than Yoing someone."

According to a report from The Daily Dot, it took Hedrick only four hours to create the app, which has seen a massive surge in popularity in the past few days.

The character of Hodor is inspiring more than just this "Hodor" app- there's also the "Hodor Keyboard," which for $0.99 will turn the keys of an Android keyboard into a single button labeled "Hodor." Unsurprisingly, only the word Hodor can be typed with the app, although it does allow for the word to be typed in both upper and lower case.

At a colossal 6'10'', Nairn has been a part of the show since its first season, and is a DJ along with being an actor.
