"Sailor Moon Crystal," or as it's known in full, "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal," is set to premiere this Saturday, July 5 at 7:00 PM, but new footage of the series has just leaked online.
The footage features a new song from the series- a new theme song, entitled "Moon Pride" by Momoiro Clover Z.
The new series was announced two years ago, on the twentieth anniversary of the original "Sailor Moon" debut. Select fans were invited for a special celebration, to learn the first details about the new series. Kotono MItsuishi, the voice actress who played Sailor Moon in the original 1992 anime, will reprise her role in this new series. The other characters have all been recast with new Japanese actors.
The series is somewhat of a reboot for "Sailor Moon," as "Sailor Moon Crystal" is a re-telling of the "Dark Kingdom" storyline from the anime and manga. In the story, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus fight the evil Queen Beryl, the servant of an evil energy being named Metalia. "Sailor Moon Crystal" will follow the same story.
The leaked footage can be seen above.
The original "Sailor Moon" manga was first published in 1992, and follows a teenager named Usagi Tsukino, who has the ability to transform into the magic soldier Sailor Moon. The manga series was finally translated into a full English version in 2011.
Shortly after the manga was first published, "Sailor Moon" was adapted into an anime series, which ran from 1992-1997. Since then, the series has seen massive acclaim, and has developed an enormous following. Not surprisingly, anticipation for the new series is extremely high.
An official trailer for "Sailor Moon Crystal" can be seen below.
The series will be available to stream on Hulu, as well as Viz Media's Neon Alley.
