The new features in iOS 8 enable more functionality than ever before, including third-party keyboards, widgets, inter-application photo editing, and custom sharing option on Share Sheets. Sharing is no longer limited to Apple's own services and partners.
With iOS 8 and Extensibility, Apple no longer has to make deals with social networks and integrate them into the iOS one at a time. With this, any application that you download will be able to hook unto the Share Sheets and will give users the option to share content to other users. An example of this is Apple and Pinterest do not have to come up with any special deals on any implementations, so when users download it, the Pinterest icon will become available on the share sheet. Because of custom sharing extensions, users can customize their sharing options. People can toggle on and off all the sharing options (except messages and mail). With the iOS 8 and share extensions, users are able to use a plugin that allows them to sharedirectly from Safari or Photos or any other application that hooks unto the Share Sheet system.
Share extensions are designed to provide functionality and added convenience to users, while maintaining security and privacy. iOS applications are "sandboxed" so that they can only access their own data unless permission is given by the user. This is why users will notice requests for access to their Camera Rolls, or why users have to tap "open in." This makes it harder for malicious applications to get into the system and into your private and personal data.
Share extensions are simply a part of the new Extensibility features of iOS 8. They do not allow usersor the developers to do anything and everything. These features are targeted, which allows users to privately share anything that they want to without thinking about security.
