After winning his fights against Anderson Silva during 2013, Chris Weidman was critiqued to be won by fluke. But this time, he proved to be one of the best fighters at any weight. He answered all his critics at UFC 175 fight, which was held last Saturday. He knocked off Lyoto Machida, earning his stripes as 185-pound kingpin.
Weidman silenced all his critics after his victory over Machida. He not only hold on to hard shots but also kept a constant pace over all five rounds.
The judges' scores were 49-45, 48-47, and 49-46. Weidman rendered a convincing match against former light heavy-weight champion.
Long debates were carried on Weidman's consecutive victories against Silva, which were rubbished by Weidman in this fight. Weidman entered the ring with UFC gold and he proved to be the keeper of it.
"He was as good as I thought," Weidman told UFC commentator Joe after the fight was over. "He's quick. When you think he's going to do something, he does the opposite, so he's really tricky in there. He's a great fighter. Tough as nails."
Weidman used the same game plan which he used against Silva. He shut down opponent's style by straight-ahead pressure with constant punches and occasional take downs.
At the end of third round, Machida had a cut on his right eye and was fading in the game. The game appeared to be in Weidman's favor as he continued to go for takedowns and attacks.
Weidman continued to impose on Machida in round fifth. This is when he answered all the questions on his capability. He took Machida's hardest shots and stood through it. He sailed through the storm and scored his final takedown in the last two minutes to seal his title.
Lyoto Machida complimented Weidman's performance and talent at the end of the fight.
"He's the true champion," Machida told Rogan. "He deserves the title."
