'Homeland' Season 4 update: spoilers, release date, new cast members

By

The fourth season of Showtime's award-winning drama series "Homeland" is set to premiere in fall this year. Here are some things that we know about it so far.

Warning: major spoilers ahead.

In season 2, we saw Brody (Damian Lewis) publicly executed in Iraq. Before he died, he found out that Carrie is pregnant with his child.

It was revealed that Carrie is keeping the baby, and would now have two important jobs: being a mother and a CIA agent.

The plot for the next season has not yet been revealed, but Variety reported that Carrie will be a station chief based in Islamabad and Kabul.

"I think [the child] is going to be a big theme for her emotionally, said Danes in an interview. "I think she probably escapes into her job. I think she hurls herself at it as a way to avoid some unresolved, very painful feelings to do with Brody."

Aside from being a CIA agent and a mom, Carrie will still face another challenge that has plagued her since she was young: being bipolar. Showrunner Alex Gansa said that Carrie's mental condition would still be part of the story--"She will be dealing with that again in season four."

Meanwhile, there is a possibility that Diego Klatenhoff's character (Mike Faber) will not be part of the upcoming season. "Brody's dead and I think they've moved on. I had such a great run, but from what I understand, Carrie (Claire Danes) is gone overseas and I don't know how they would squeeze it in," he said.

Because of Brody's death, Dana (Morgan Saylor) and his wife Jessica (Morena Baccarin) are expected to have fewer appearances in season 4. Mandy Patinkin will be back to play Saul, Carrie's mentor.

Two new actors have been added to the cast for season 4: Raza Jaffrey ("Smash") and Michael O'Keefe ("King & Maxwell" and "Roseanne"). Corey Stoll ("House of Cards") will also guest star.

The writers have been working on a script since January, and the cast and crew are reportedly filming in Cape Town, South Africa. No final date has been released yet, but it's believed the show will return sometime in the fall of 2014.
