NBA Free Agents 2014 News: Phoenix Suns interested in acquiring Greg Monroe

By

The Pheonix Suns were among the teams that have the most cap space entering the 2014 NBA Free agency - enough cap space to pair James and Anthony. Unable to sign any of the big names this summer, the Suns are looking to integrate key pieces in their roster that almost reached the playoffs in a very tough Western Conference after a 48-win season. The team's top priority remains resigning restricted free agent Eric Bledsoe but they are also working on bolstering their front court and one of the names in their list is is Greg Monroe.

Jordan Schultz from The Huffington Post tweeted that the Suns were interested in acquiring the 24-year-old power forward from Detriot:

"Hearing Suns may be considering a Greg Monroe offer. They have space to get both him and Bledsoe but would lose cap flexibility long-term."

The Detriot Pistons have the right to match any offer to Monroe but the Phoenix Suns could steal the young power forward away from Detriot if they offer a lucrative contract that would prove to much for the Pistons to match. The Suns have enough salary cap to offer Monroe a lucrative offer then resign Eric Bledsoe to a maximum or near maximum contract to further bolster their roster and improve their chances on entering the playoffs and make some noise in the Western Conference this coming season.

In his first four seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Greg Monroe has established himself as a decent player in the paint averaging 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor. He is a gifted offensive big man but has also proven that he can anchor a teams defense, as he managed to make 10 defensive win shares and a 106 defensive rating according to Basketball-Reference.

The Suns have a handful of young, talented big men in their roster like Alex Len and Miles Plumlee but are missing a legitimate starting power forward with Markieff Morris and Shavlik Randolph filling the spot. If they could bring the 2010 No.7 overall pick by Detroit, they will surely be able to fortify their front court and compete in the West that features dominant power forwards like Blake Griffin, Lamarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love, and Dirk Nowitzki.

With the Phoenix Suns, Greg Monroe has the chance to start for a possible soon to be contender instead of being stuck in a crowded front court in Detroit with Josh Smith dominating the offense.
