The two-and-a-half minute trailer for the erotic film "Fifty Shades of Grey" recently made a new recors. According to Universal and Focus Features, the trailer of its highly-anticipated film has reached 100 million views across all social media platforms in just a week. This means that it is the most watch film trailer on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and just about any Internet platform you could think off.
RelishMix CEO Marc Karzen, whose company is into social media intelligence analyses, was quoted by The Escapist and said, "Fifty Shades Of Grey trailers are pulling monumental views."
Deadline presented a sampling of 'Fifty Shades' sweeping domination across social media: "The 15-second teaser premiered unannounced to Beyoncé's 14 million Instagram fans on Saturday, July 19, notching 443,000 likes and over 85,000 comments in an unusual stroke of pop marketing synergy. The tease of a teaser featuring a breathy snippet of Beyoncé's Crazy In Love also aired in TV and digital spots for the next three days, and ran in a 30-second radio spot in 16 markets."
The film, which would debut in theaters on Valentine's Day next year, is an adaptation of the first book of E L James' best-selling book trilogy. The novels have become a global success with over 50 translations and 70 million copies sold. It tells the story of two consenting adults, Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), who indulge in an erogenous affair.
But did you know that the original treatment for the book trilogy was for television? The Hollywood Reporter said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht brought the idea to Universal and Focus Features, who had already purchased the rights to produce content from the book trilogy. He told THR, "If you read the book, this could only be a series ... I'm the guy who called up Universal and said, 'I'll get you three years on the air as a series. Let's just do a Fifty Shades of Grey series. But movie people think things are movies, and authors think things are movies. Up until recently, movies were the Tiffany jewel in the crown."
Although Starz might be considered a small player in producing television shows, the company has some very formidable, critically-acclaimed projects made for television it can be proud of. The company is behind 50 Cent-produced drama about a New York City criminal, "Power," time travel Anglo-American series "Outlander," "Spartacus," an ancient Rome series focused on the life of a Thracian gladiator, and pirate drama "Black Sails"
