Free Agent Greg Monroe OK with qualifying offer from Pistons; Plans to become an Unrestricted Free Agent next summer

By

Detroit Pistons Center/Forward Greg Monroe is still floating in the free agency market after he failed to reach an agreement on a new contract with Detroit. Still without any offers from other teams this offseason, Monroe is now reportedly planning to play out this season on a qualifying offer with the Pistons and become an unrestricted free agent next summer in hopes of landing a lucrative contract. Here is a report from Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News:

While the Pistons big man has not pursued an offer sheet from another team, he has pursued sign-and-trade possibilities, and Monroe is "definitely" willing to take the one-year qualifying offer worth $5.3 million from Detroit in order to ensure his unrestricted free agency next summer, a source familiar with Monroe's thinking told The Detroit News.

The source requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the contract talks. Monroe has until Oct. 1 to agree to a deal or sign the qualifying offer.

Monroe had a solid outing with the Pistons last season, averaging 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while playing along side second year standout Andre Drummond and high flying forward Josh Smith on a talented and athletic front court that failed to meet expectations after a 29-win total season.

The Pistons big man was also reportedly being pursued by several teams including the Trail Blazers, Pelicans and Wizards early in the free agency but never received any offer sheet from any of the teams which would have given the Pistons the option to match of let him walk away per SB Nation. He joins Eric Bledsoe among the young talented restricted free agents who received zero offer sheet from teams this summer in the free agency period.

Monroe and those that are close to him have expressed publicly about the young big man's dissatisfaction with the Pistons and his intention to be part of a different organization. Monroe was dissatisfied with the management's decisions and on the fact that the Pistons did not offer him a max extensions which he was looking forward too per VAVEL.

The Pistons cannot trade Monroe to a team without his permission once he signs the qualifying offer.
