The Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo is currently on an expiring contract and will become arguably the biggest draw in the free agency market next summer. President Danny Ainge will do everything in his power to keep him as the focal point of a young, developing Celtics team but if Rondo fails to show any commitment in resigning with the team next summer when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, Ainge doesn't have a choice but to move him this offseason. Better trade him now for valuable assets than to let him walk away next summer for nothing.
The Sacramento Kings are reportedly the top suitor for Rondo for quite some time now. Sports Talk host Tyler Spencer even reported that there is an 80% percent that Rondo will be moved to Sacramento for Ben McLemore and Derrick Williams before the 2014-15 season begins according to his sources.
After the Sacramento Kings let Isaiah Thomas walk to the Phoenix Suns this summer, many were speculating it was a sign that Rondo was coming to the Kings. But are the Celtics really serious on dealing Rondo for McLemore and Williams as what Spencer suggested? Basketball Insiders believes that the Celtics are not going to settle for such a mediocre deal and have possibly declined an offer from the Kings:
Sources close to the process in both Boston and Sacramento are adamantly denying that a Rajon Rondo deal is being discussed.
Its hard to imagine Rondo fitting on a rebuilding team like the Boston Celtics who missed the playoffs last season. When he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer, he will surely entertain offers from other teams especially those from contenders and its likely that he will leave the Celtics for a max contract deal and a chance of winning NBA championships.
Boston, though, will continue to be diligent in striking a deal for Rondo as what Donald Wood of Bleacher Report suggests.If the right trade is offered, look for the team to pull the trigger on Rondo. But for now, they will to pass the Kings offer of Mclemore and Williams.
