ABC News reported that a 9 year-old girl had accidentally shot her instructor in the head with an Uzi sub-machine, killing him instantly. The incident happened at Bullets and Burgers, an establishment in Las Vegas which is, according to its official website, is a "private outdoor range set in a stunning outdoor desert landscape." According to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, 39 year-old Charles Vacca was teaching the child how to use the Uzi as he stands beside her. The family was on vacation from New Jersey when they decided to try the popular outdoor gun range. The girl's parents stood nearby and documented their girl's experience on camera.
As seen in this video on Youtube, the instructor can be heard complimenting the girl's first shot and suggests to go "full auto" on the second shot. That is when the unthinkable happens as the recoil causes her to lose control of the gun and the bullet fires straight into Vacca's head. He was pronounced dead after being airlifted to the University Medical Center.
Sam Scarmando, who has been operating the joint in the last 14 years, told Buzzfeed about employee safety at Bullets and Burgers. He said, "It sounds like a cliche, but we've never even (handed out) a Band-Aid. (I) don't know what happened."
Allowing childrens near firearms had stirred the debate regarding gun control. Firearms safety expert Ronald Scott gave his expert opinion to Fox News about facilities like Bullets and Burgers. He said, "Most shooting ranges have an age limit and strict safety rules when teaching children to shoot. Instructors usually have their hands on guns when children are firing high-powered weapons. You can't give a 9-year-old an Uzi and expect her to control it".
Scarmando said that a safety committee would be reviewing the incident. At the moment, national guidelines dictate that children at least 8 years of age must be with their parents to be allowed to fire weapons in firing ranges.
