A few days ago, a report surfaced saying that the Houston Rockets were interested in adding Ramon Sessions to their back court-depleted roster via a sign-and-trade deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. After trading Jeremy Lin to the Los Angeles Lakers with the hopes of signing Chris Bosh to a max contract, the Rockets looked suddenly thin in the point guard position, so acquiring Sessions made a lot of sense, according to NBA pundits.
But it appears though that the Rockets don't have the assets that would garner the Bucks' interest to trade Sessions. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle said in his report that there is limited interest on the Bucks' end and the chance of a trade deal is "unlikely."
Sessions is an unrestricted free agent and Brett Pollakoff of Basketball Insiders believes that, theoretically, Houston can simply sign him for an extension if a deal would be made. The Rockets, however, "have more players under contact than roster spots allowed," Pollajoff argued. Making room for a roster spot for Sessions along with salary cap room restrictions may have been the reason why a trade deal with the Bucks did not transpire.
Sessions would have been a nice addition to the Rockets if the rumored trade deal happened, according to HoopsHabit. The article explained, "This move would give the Rockets an experienced backup point guard to starter Patrick Beverley, who is essentially the inverse of Sessions. As a pick and roll master, Sessions would ignite the Rockets' feeble second unit with instant offense; his incredibly quick first-step enables him to either bolt to the hoop for a layup, dump the ball off to one of the bigs underneath the basket, or kick the ball out to an open shooter."
But if there is still any hope left that the Rockets can acquire Sessions before the trade deadline, then they need to pursue it. Although Patrick Beverly has emerged as a capable starter for the team, having Isaiah Canaan and Ishmael Smith as the back-up point guards won't do Houston any good heading into the season especially if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs. They need a veteran point guard who is capable of running a team for spurts and Sessions is the best thing left available in the market right now.
