A rare blue diamond may be seen at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, which will be open until January 6.

On September 13, a Gem Vault exhibition caught the attraction of many tourists and spectators as they witnessed a 12-carat gem called 'Blue Moon Diamond', considered one of the rarest gems, as it possesses a unique color and clarity. The stone was discovered by miners in Cullinan mining area located 40 kilometers east of Pretoria in South Africa, as reported by Tech Times.

The element Boron is responsible for the diamond's distinct blue color, as found by Smithsonian Institution with the use of ultraviolet light. According to Forbes, the typical diamond and other blue diamonds, when tested under the ultraviolet light, shows a color of grey, in which the Blue Moon did not and the gem produced a distinct 20-second red glow of light -- an evidence that a diamon is saturated.

Cora International, a manufacturer of jewels and diamonds, bought it rough on an estimated $25.6 million, and went on to cut the gem a month before the exhibition commenced.

"That for us was a big thing because it gives you the purity of the diamond," Suzette Gomes speaks about the vivid blue-colored gem. "Other blues also glow phosphor red but it doesn't last as long."

"The fact that you could buy it rough, plan it and cut it is special. This is a billion years old and it's going to be here long after we're gone. That's the beauty of diamonds," she said.

Meanwhile, she has decided the feature the diamond on the LA Museum as she aims to help the profile of the said museum. "We just want to get through the exhibition in the hope that it raises its profile," Gomes explained. "I want to help them. What they do is awesome and they always struggle for money. They need funding and this will raise their profile too so it's good for everyone."
