The Morris twins, Markieff and Marcus, have finally found their way in the NBA playing together in the same team in Phoenix. Both Markieef and Marcus managed to make relevant strides last season, playing major roles in a young and dangerous Suns team. Now it seems that they will continue their journey in the NBA together in Arizona according to Marc Stein of ESPN who says that the Phoenix Suns are nearing an extension with both twins:
Hearing: Twin brothers Markieff & Marcus Morris closing in on contract extensions with Phoenix that could be announced as early as Monday.... both eligible for extensions until Halloween deadline and early word is both on course to score four-year contracts. Early word in circulation is that the two Morris contracts likely to total in $52 million range. Precise split between the two brothers TBA.
Markieff averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds last season with the Suns while Marcus averaged 10 points and 4 rebounds. Matt Moore of CBS Sports believes that depending on the amount of years, the new contract extensions could be a reasonable compensation for a pair of promising young forwards or a genuine steal - if both deals are for four years and less than $6 million per season,
The extension is also a great move for the Suns because both Markieff and Marcus tend to play at their best when they are together in the same team. The fact that they are developing their careers together in Phoenix has truly played a significant role in their progress from a mental standpoint.
According to Jere Longman of the New York Times, Phoenix's coach last season, Alvin Gentry, said that Markieff "kept urging Phoenix to trade for his brother," and that their former college coach, Bill Self, told him, "You need Marcus. If you can get him, he'll make Markieff work harder."
With their new contracts set before the start of the season, the Morris twins have truly established themselves as pillars in one of the most fun and exciting young rotations in the NBA. In the coming season, look for Markieff and Marcus Morris to continue to develop and emerge as one of leagues most prized role players.
