Well, it's finally here. "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B," the much-maligned biopic of the famous '90s R&B singer, Aaliyah, has aired on Lifetime. And to almost no one's surprise, the film that was blasted for months before its release was blasted again once people actually saw it.
MTV has a report of all the backlash "The Princess of R&B" has gotten so far- and not all of it is from ordinary fans. A number of celebrities and R&B heavyweights have weighed in, and it seems like all of them are just as dissatisfied with the movie as everyone else.
According to MTV, Timbaland said the following:
"This is why people should never remake movies," posted Timbaland on Instagram. "Bullshit happens. Now you have to deal with the consequences."
Trey Songz joked that Lifetime would cast Flava Flav in the eventual biopic of his own life (one of the biggest criticisms Lifetime has faced is poor, mismatched casting).
Missy Elliott also retweeted a GIF of her, Timbaland and Aaliyah- while not an outright complaint about the movie, she too is getting into the discussion.
However, there's a silver lining for Lifetime- despite the general population hating their movie with a violent fury, it knocked it out the park as far as the ratings go (seems like a lot of people tuned in out of anger). Entertainment Weekly reports that "The Princess of R&B" had 3.2 million viewers, making it the second-most successful TV movie of 2014.
Debra Martin Chase, executive producer of "The Princess of R&B," had this to say to the Washington Post, in her film's defense.
"Biopics are hard," said Chase. "People have an opinion and social media allows them to voice that opinion. But at the end of the day, our goal was to make the best movie possible."
Whether or not she succeeded in making the "best movie possible," it's hard to argue she's gotten everyone talking about it.
