NBA Trade Rumors: Brooklyn Nets to ship Andre Kirilinko to the Philadelphia 76ers in a salary dumping move

By

After a rough 8-12 start in the young season, the Brooklyn Nets are reportedly making some roster changes and it includes a trade deal for one of their veteran forwards Andre Kirilinko according to a report by ESPN:

The Brooklyn Nets are trading Andrei Kirilenko to the Philadelphia 76ers in a deal that will be finalized Thursday, a league source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports has the complete report on the trade deal:

The 76ers will send forward Brandon Davies to the Nets and acquire a 2020 second-round pick in the deal, as well as the right to swap second-round picks with Brooklyn in the 2018 draft. The Nets will likely include guard Jorge Gutierrez in the deal, a league source told Yahoo.

Kirilenko is in the final year of a $3.3 million contract, and will be waived in Philadelphia once the deal is completed, sources said. Kirilenko would become a free agent, but it could still be several weeks - even months - before he's ready to sign a deal to play elsewhere this season, sources said.

The move would free up nearly $11 million in salary and luxury tax - something that Brooklyn direly needs after going over the luxury tax threshold last season when they signed Paul Pierce (now with the Washington Wizards) and Kevin Garnett to join forces with Brook Lopez, Deron Williams, and Joe Johnson.

Per Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com:

Why would the Nets want to move Kirilenko? Brooklyn is set to pay $90.57 in luxury tax to the NBA this season as a punishment for being close to $30 million over the salary cap.

By trading Kirilenko, the Nets would not only save having to pay him the remainder of his contract, but also avoid paying the fine for having his salary on the roster.

Andre Kirilinko has been one of the best international players that entered the NBA but unfortunately for him, his days with the Brooklyn Nets will soon come to an end.
