Russia and US May Engage In New War But In Space, NASA and SpaceX Prepares ISS Cargo

By

Russia and the United States have been in the headlines for quite some time as their international relations turn frosty. Russia's moves on Ukraine have earned ire and antagonism from other countries including the US. However, despite their regional conflict, the two countries may soon take the "competition" to space as Russia reveals plans for a possible new space station.

The International Space Station (ISS) has been a mark of cooperation from Europe, Russia and the US but this time, Russia's plans may be solely for the country - no collaborative effort from other countries. Although there is an almost Cold War scenario these days between the US and the Russia, the ISS is one of the few marks of cooperation between the two countries.

Phys quotes NASA's Scott Kelly about the shared efforts up in space. He shares: "we rely on each other implicitly for our lives."

"Any political issues that exist between our countries is something we don't even discuss. We're great friends, we're colleagues, we're professionals. That's the way it has to be."

Another official, Mikhail Kornienko from Russia, discusses: "There is no borders in space between us."

"It's a great example of... working together, especially for politics on the ground."

Nonetheless, looking at the current situation, that cooperation may only be limited and existing in space. However, that cooperation may also be at risk as Roscosmos chief, Oleg Ostepenko, shares plans on a new Russian space station. According to the official and through Geek, the country is "considering" of proceeding with it. The upcoming station will play a crucial role in the Moon aspirations of the country. However, Russia may still need more time before proceeding with the project as it faces one of its worst economic crises to date - starting on a large scale project means settling pressing matters first.

As for the part of the US, NASA announces that it gave SpaceX approval in relation to its first milestone aiming to transport people from US soil to the ISS. THe project is in line with the Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) contract.

NASA's Commercial Crew Program manager, Kathy Lueders, says: "This milestone sets the pace for the rigorous work ahead as SpaceX meets the certification requirements outlined in our contract."
