Will Smith, David Ayer Talk "Suicide Squad" Workouts? DC Comics Backstory, Searching for Another Major Actor Exposed

By

"Suicide Squad" might not have the name recognition of "The Avengers" or "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," but the little supvillain movie that could may blow the doors off of Hollywood in 2015. For one, the film's star power is unmatched- with Will Smith playing the antihero assassin Deadshot, Jared Leto as a new version of the Joker and a yet-to-be-cast actor as Rick Flagg (given that WB was trying to court Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal for the role, they're looking for another Smith-sized name) the movie could be huge.

And just as importantly, all the "Suicide Squad" cast members are excitedly talking up the DC supervillain film. And dropping potential spoilers, too!

First up is director David Ayer, who's been talking up the film on Twitter- specifically, which comics he might pull the film's story from. Ayer asked his followers on Twitter the following question: "The eternal question: To canon, or not to canon? ;-)"

Naturally, he means whether the "Suicide Squad" movie should stick to the official DC Comics canon, or if he should dig his hands in there and start inventing his own pieces of the DC Universe. Most people would probably say canon, right?

Well so did Ayer, answering his own question with another tweet: "Canon #skwad - The DC universe is too rich to go very far astray." Ayer also posted pics of classic "Suicide Squad" comics that may influence the film.

Ayer also revealed his take on the villain Harley Quinn: "The case of Harley Quinn: Her madness defines her. Is she mad because of WHO she loves or because she loves him so much?"

But Ayer's not the only one with "Suicide Squad" on the brain. Will Smith, who'll be starring as Deadshot, spoke about his role in the film- apparently, he's already been hitting the gym for several months (and swearing off all carbs) in order to get bulked up enough to play a supervillain. Smith also mentioned the kerfuffle about Hardy and Gyllenhaal rejecting "Suicide Squad," but he's not worried- according to Smith, actor schedules are complex that big names drop out of films all the time. And if Will Smith isn't worried, it's safe to say we shouldn't be either.
