Assassin's Creed No Longer In Developmental Hell, Gets 2016 Release

By

Assassin's Creed has finally emerged out of its developmental limbo. Ubisoft Entertainment and its flagship for film and television production, Ubisoft Motion Pictures has been given the permission to go ahead with the ambitous film adaptation of one its acclaimed video game franchises.

The long-stalled big screen project even has a target release date on December 21, 2016. Michael Fassbinder will now share acting credits with Oscar-winning actress, Marion Cotillard, who was just recently cast to join the film.

The French multinational company has partnered with New Regency, the Los Angeles-based company responsible for the production of "12 Years a Slave", "Gone Girl" and "Birdman".

"We have the pleasure to announce today that the green light has been given by New Regency, and the production has already started," said Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot. "This is a very important milestone for the project and for our team on Assassin's Creed."

Assassin's Creed has long been in development since 2011, immediately following the inception of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, which directly grants the company within an inch on how the final product of its video-to-film adaptations will present itself. Speaking on the Unisoft blog in 2014, the aforementioned Guillemot elucidated a preview to Ubisoft's future movie audiences, regarding the process of creative control stating, "that the best way to to do that is to make sure you control what is important in movie creation".

"Movies can also create content that we can reuse for our games," he says. "For example, if you do a movie and you have lots of special effects, lots of creations of worlds and characters, you can pick that up and put that in your game. So, the games become richer, more alive, and more cinematic." he added.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed has sold more than 73 million units as of 2014.
