The psychotic demeanor and that maniacal laughter are the unmistakable hallmarks of arch-nemesis Joker. The famed character just made his debut on the Batman comic book-spawned TV series, Gotham Entitled “The Blind Fortune Teller,” Episode 16 of the new series. The episode introduces a troubled young man by the name of “Jerome” and tells of his experiences which ultimately prove to be very transformative.
For those who missed the episode, which aired February 16, we caught Detective Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Dr. Thompkins on a night out on the circus! That had been the first official date of these two very important characters. There, the two found themselves entertained by the trapeze sensations, The Flying Graysons.
It was during their high wire performance that the Graysons are attacked on-stage by a band of angry clowns, Fansided recapped. Gordon, being the dutiful lawman, intercedes and tried to break up the one-way brawl. People will learn that the fisticuffs were the result of a long-standing feud between two circus clans, the Graysons and the Lloyds.
Interestingly, it is by a union of these two feuding families that one of Gotham’s most beloved heroes will be born. John Grayson and Mary Lloyd will, apparently, have a son named Dick—who is destined to grow up as Robin, The Boy Wonder That is, however, a story for another day.
Back to the brawl, which we learned that like most knuckle-throwing incidents, was over a woman. This particular woman was a snake-charmer named Lyla. The plot thickens when it is revealed that Lyla has a son, Jerome (Cameron Monaghan).
Unable to locate the root of the brawl, Gordon enlists the aid of Jerome to find his missing Mom. He does so by letting loose her pet snake. The serpent quickly locates its master—her corpse to be precise.
Viewers are now left to wonder if his mother’s apparent murder will push Jerome over the edge? Then again, it could be that Lyla’s murder proves that her son has already gone over the edge long ago?
At the police precinct Gordon interviews a strangely calm Jerome about the last moments of his mother. The youngster proved very candid about his mom’s promiscuity. He tells the detective that it was her loose morals that ultimately lead to his conception and birth!
Digital Spy reported that “The Blind Fortune Teller” was originally intended by producers to be the season finale. However, not only did it signal an extension of Season 1 but it also saw the introduction of arch-villain Joker, and the pre-introduction of Batman’s partner in crime-fighting.
