Android 5.0 Lollipop Update: Fixing battery bugs by disabling third-party apps

By

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update has arrived on several flagship smartphones, bringing bright promises and sweetness along with a bitter aftertaste. This is after some users experience battery drain issues right after instaling the new Android update on board.

While the complain about battery bugs is not shared by most smartphone users that installed the updated Android 5.0 Lollipop in their handsets, there are considerable number of users from various parts of the globe that experienced it right after updating their device. The catch is this problem seems to occur across smartphone brands.

If it is not brand-related, then what must be triggering the problem? Tech reviews identify the same culprits: third-party apps, especially the power hungry ones. Keeping them open or active, or not updating them, could cause the battery to drain under normal condition. This also applies to unused apps that are running in the background.

Fortunately, the solutions that tech experts offer are simple and easy to do. One of them is rebooting the device into Safe Mode. This setting allows the device to function on minimal settings, with all third-party apps uninstalled to clear the cache and terminate background services associated with unused apps.

Another is to backup important data and settings on the phone as a prerequisite to performing a factory reset. Turning the device back to factory mode will clear out all custom and user data on the device.
To do this, go to Settings, then Backup & Reset.

Disabling all the third-party apps is also an option to identify which of them is the culprit. Isolating apps can be time consuming, however. But phone users can look at their device's settings which features and apps require high power supply from those that don't.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is now available to various flagship smartphones including Galaxy S5, sold at Verizon and T-Mobile; German Galaxy S4 (though not update yet to most users), Galaxy S5 owners throughout Europe as well as Note 4 owners in Poland and Galaxy Note Edge owners in Australia.

LG G3 from AT&T and Sprint also now have the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update, and so with Nexus devices including Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, to name a few.
