After much speculation, South African director Neill Blomkamp himself confirmed through his Instagram account that 20th Century Fox has hired him to direct the latest installment of the Alien movie series. Blomkamp’s name was first linked to the then unconfirmed Alien 5 project, after he posted online some unofficial concept art of what was clearly the infamous Alien creature in all its fanged glory.
It is believed the sci-fi director’s foray into Ridley Scott’s immensely popular franchise, may actually eclipse the hype on his latest movie about a robot named Chappie. Going in 35-year old Blomkamp’s favor is the fact that actress Sigourney Weaver, star of the original 1979 Alien movie and its sequels, was quoted as saying that she is more than willing to come aboard for the new project, Screen Rant reported.
Since the Alien 5 project is barely at the budding stage at this point, it is impossible to make a wise guess as to what direction the plot will take, the same report added. However, Weaver’s recent statements seem to indicate the much-beloved Ellen Ripley character may yet again be resurrected in the latest installment!
Meantime, Variety reported that Alien 5, which has yet to be given its official title, is a distinct project from Prometheus 2, which is still in production with original director Ridley Scott calling the shots. Both Alien-spawned films are, however, produced by Scott's outfit, Scott Free.
Alien has inspired a whole genre of films and comic books that can be considered cross-overs or “loosely based” on its plot. These include 2004’s Alien vs. Predator, 2007’s Alien vs. Predator: Requiem and 2012’s Prometheus, which is about to get its very own sequel.
Alien 5 is envisioned to take place in the years following Prometheus 2, according to leaks from production insiders, Variety added. There is no word yet as to the planned release date of the 5th installment.
