This overwhelmingly exciting sci-fi film that hit screens last week, Project Almanac's Time Travelling Possibilities promotion hyped viewers. However, critics were not satisfied with the performance of the entire movie. They even label it as stupid.
Project Almanac, released last January 30 with a total run-time of 2 hours, is a sci-fi movie that featured a group of teens who discovered secret plans about the time machine. Thus, they made a real one. But towards the end, their discovery lead to uncontrollable situations.
From the onset of the movie, the plot, characters and the introduction were excellent as the actors portrayed their respective characters in a very good way as they should be. However, as soon as the plot is going to its climax, audience were disappointed to the fact that the sci-fi [supposedly] film turned out to be a minute of an advertisement of Lollapalooza (music festival) where the characters weren't able to hold on to their roles which were excellently made from the start. Thus, making the movie inconsistent in this part.
Another area where the critics didn't like is that, aside from the inconsistency of the characters' portrayal, from the nerdy group, they ironically, became stupid, illogical, and childish in a way that they were completely different from the expectations of the audience based from the plot itself. They tend to be emotional that isn't related to the atmosphere of the movie and their responses or reactions in various cases from the scenes of the film, didn't coincide to what the situation required. Somehow, the critics, who are also part of the audience, really find the movie unsatisfied because they seemed to feel that the team behind this movie set the plot for the sake of making a plot without really considering the points where the people find them critical such as the underdeveloped storylines.
One thing that they have observed from the film, is the mysterious death of David's [Jonny Weston] father which remained unsolved. Though his son has uncovered his secret and well-hidden concept of time machine, at least, that would be also the same way that he could find his lost father since this is much more appropriate according to critics.
A lot of the failures of the film were noticed by the critics aside from its positive side that this is one of the good films about time machine and its "time travelling possibilities" concept, but the entire plot seemed to remain shallow.
With these being said, though a lot of people have appreciated the film, yet, a lot of them were unsatisfied especially with the visual effects used. According to one critic, nothing interesting effects were featured from the movie. Albeit the movie was shot in a "shakey-cam" style which has been the popular from the Blair Witch Project and the rest of the indie films, made a good job in conveying some parts of the scenes, yet, it turned out to be annoying towards the end and even resulted to nausea to some.
Another critic said otherwise through mentioning how the movie effectively induced thrill with their effects. According to the site, the director, Dean Israelite, was able to combine the "standard montage of jumpy erratic flashbacks with a violent overall portrayal of the act of time travel itself." The site added that the film used the "found-footage format" which is usually used in a horror film in a first-person point-of-view to induce scares that good. With the characters, they have portrayed their roles with excellence [same with the other site, however, turned out bad along the way].
Thus, making the movie as a big disappointment to the audience who have been hyped with its release. For them, it sounded like the movie was just tyring to sell tickets without valuing much about the quality of the film they are trying to show to people. As a result, many don't want to recommend this film to be showcased to those who haven't watched.
Project Almanac implied that the past cannot be changed no matter how the person do in the present to correct it. From the film, the desire of making the time machine was good at first, but later, it turned out to be the worst.
