Assassin's Creed is well known for bringing us some of the best historical fiction lore that has ever been produced. In fact, according to Josh Engen of Cinema Blend, it is the addictive lore that Assassin's Creed offers video game players that keep them glued to their seats. Fortunately, Ubisoft announces an improved balance between modern and historical sequences in the upcoming sequel.
The earlier versions of the game franchise kept us gamers excited by having us jump between the modern and historical sceneries, giving us that kind of diversity that would keep us from being bored with one setting. However, the more recent iterations - more specifically Assassin's Creed: Unity, received lesser postive reviews than its earlier counterparts due to its 'reduced' modern day sequences.
Even Darby McDevitt, the writer for Assassin's Creed, acknowledged this weakness when he said in an interview: "We always plan to have more modern day but we have to be really smart about how we do it. There was a plan for a little more modern day in Unity - a plan. Nothing that was actually cut."
However, during a recent Ubisoft community livestream event, McDevitt explained how changes are being done so that future Assassin's Creed games would provide more modern day sequences to its players. He also talked about using existing materials for present-day storylines, such as what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, which contained one of his favorite modern day moments in the game.
"That only came about because we were able to reuse Monteriggioni from AC2," says McDevitt. "So the future - and this is the plan - is to smartly reuse things so we can have a more robust modern day."
It is also good to know that Ubisoft won't be spending too much time on the modern era while leaving huge parts of history behind either. As McDevitt put it in the interview, he and his team have developed centuries of storylines that would impact the series in the years to come.
It has been reported that the title of the next sequel would be Assassin's Creed: Victory, with a story set in England's Victorian era. We are looking forward to experiencing the next level of balance between modern and historical tones. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
