HTC One M9 vs HTC One M8; Major Model Differences and Updates on Receiving Carriers

By

One will mistake HTC One M9 as its predecessor, M8 - this is one of the numerous feedbacks against HTC's flagship model. After HTC One M8's release last March 2014, the model has gained global praise thanks to its fast camera and the spectacular BoomSound audio feature; furthermore this made M9's release much anticipated.

Is the new M9 worth a few Benjamins? Here is a quick survey on the key differences between the two.

Power. HTC M9 comes with the 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, with four cores clocked at 2.0GHz and another four at 1.5GH while M8 has 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801. This state-of-the-art processor developed by Qualcomm allows M9's 4K Ultra HD videos capabilities, online gaming and flawless communication among others. Moreover, there is an upgrade in M9's operating system to Android 5.0 Lollipop and an improvement in battery power from 2,600mAh to 2,840mAh.

Camera. Although the two models look fairly similar outside, the biggest improvement with M9 is the rear-facing camera unit. M8 was equipped with the Duo Camera, HTC 4 UltraPixel while HTC One M9 now comes with the standard 20-megapixel camera unit on the rear side of the phone powered by an f/2.2, 27.8mm lens covered by sapphire glass to prevent scratches.

Style. With M9's curved metal shell, HTC is definitely aiming for worldclass phone design. M8 came with the gunmetal grey, glacial silver, amber gold hues while M9 revolutionized the metal uni-shell to colors Gold, Grey, Silver, Pink. Their sizes are almost the same, with minimal decrease from 146.36 mm to 144.6 mm in height and from 70.96 mm to 69.7 mm in width.

Carriers. To date, HTC One M8 is under AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. For M9, as of this month, Sprint and T-Mobile confirms a release by Spring while AT&T is silent as to their release timeframe. Verizon has not confirmed anything yet, though one source mentioned otherwise.
