Sister Wives season finale revealed the complicated nature of the polygamous marriage with Kody and his wives. Likewise, it appears the marriage setup effects can spell sacrifice and more sacrifice.
"If anything happened to Robyn, we'd have no legal claim on Dayton, Aurora and Breanna. But they're "part of our family."; these were the words that Meri (47), Kody's (46) only legal wife, tearfully uttered after making the ultimate sacrifice of divorcing him.
Fans and more specifically polygamy critics, feared the motives behind Meri's clandestine visits to his lawyer Ronald Reynolds in the previous Sister Wives episodes this season. In the lastest episode, Meri confirmed these fears as she filed divorce and ended her 24-year relationship with Kody. In defense, she claimed that it was purely her own decision and Kody had nothing to do with it.
The finale episode highlighted Meri's commitments towards Robyn's children, Dayton (15), Aurora (12) and Breanna (9) by her first marriage as she was deeply moved by the "absence" of their biological father in their lives. A huge part of the decision as well is Kody's undeniable love for these kids stressing that "I'm their dad."
"Nothing is going to change for you and I?" were the patriarch's words as he questioned Meri of the possible effects of this abrupt "family restructuring".
Now, like all major decisions, the divorce affected Janelle (45), fearing that the marriage could mean Kody will be favoring Robyn more. The power of legal ties, indeed.
Nonetheless, the story of Meri's dauntless sacrifice does not end here. Sister Wives season finale episode raised several legal difficulties and issues that viewers will need to look forward to in the next season. Aside from looking into the marriage of Kody and Robyn, the family may need to secure the permission of Robyn's first husband for child custody - which is the reason behind the divorce and marriage in the first place.
Although numerous fans were moved by Meri's gesture of love, still a lot of viewers were worried of its implications. The divorce seemed to spark debate on the morals behind such action which clearly provides Kody a chance to move from the "older" wives to the "younger" ones.
