Ratking, the New York City hip-hop group, just released their latest album, "700 Fill"- and they've released it for free, via BitTorrent. Which is a pretty huge deal, as Ratking already made waves with their last album, "So It Goes," which was released in 2014. Releasing an album over BitTorrent is bound to cause controversy- or at least to get a ton more people listening to the album, since it's available free for everyone.
The new album features nine new tracks, plus remixes and instrumentals as well. It also features appearances from rappers Despot and Remy Banks, as well as Teddy, Slickyboy and Princess Nokia.
The full tracklist for "700 Fill" can be seen below.
1. "American Gods" feat. Remy Banks, Teddy, and Slickyboy
2. "Arnold Palmer"
3. "Bethel"
4. "Eternal Reveal"
5. "Flurry"
6. "Lenape Lane" feat. Slickyboy
7. "Steep Tech" feat. Despot and Princess Nokia
8. "Sticky Trap"
9. "Makeitwork"
Will "700 Fill" be as critically acclaimed as their last album, "So It Goes?" Some critics called that album "an exhilarating and reckless lyrical portrait of a maybe-vanishing city; part Vonnegut, part Wu Tang, part Suicide." That's some incredibly high praise. As well "So It Goes" was the group's first album, which is bound to help it make a bigger impression. Perhaps that's why the group release "700 Fill" in BitTorrent as a surprise move- that way, they can keep the momentum going that they first earned with "So It Goes."
After "So It Goes" dropped, Ratking went on tour for an entire year, so it's very likely that the release of "700 Fill" will kick off a similar tour. Or maybe Ratking will throw a monkey wrench into touring traditions like they did album releasing traditions. Can you tour over BitTorrent? Probably not... but there's probably some way to reinvent the touring norm.
