Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and 10 Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Guide

Google Developers and major mobile carriers in the U.S. like T-Mobile and Sprint have confirmed on Monday that Android 5.1 Lollipop is now available on Nexus devices, including Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. With Google's first maintenance release for Lollipop, Android 5.1 promises to bring in a handful of impressive features and significant bug fixes that its predecessor never had.

Google mentioned in its developer's website that Nexus 5 (codenamed Hammerhead), Nexus 7 (codenamed Nakasi) and Nexus 10 (codenamed Mantaray) owners can start enjoying what the update has to offer. Links to the devices' downloadable factory images are also provided.

The factory images can be used by Nexus owners who do not want to Android 5.1 rollout. By flashing the images on their device, carriers of Nexus owners will leave off such device for the update. Android 5.1 Lollipop wipes device clean, including personal data.

T-Mobile reveals on its website that the latest Android Lollipop operating system is already out for its Nexus 4 since Monday. However, the update for Nexus 5 and 7 (2013) devices will be available via a cellular connection at a later date. Meanwhile, Sprint's support page informs that Nexus 6 phablet will have the update starting today via OTA installation. The carrier warns its users that the update comes in stages and may completely arrive after several days. A representative from Sprint also revealed that the new Android 5.1 Lollipop update is also rolling out to its Nexus 5 devices.

Android 5.1 was first made available in budget phones Android One exclusively distributed in the Philippines and Indonesia.

To manually check the update, here's a good way to go.

1. Tap All Apps from the home screen.

2. Tap System.

3. Tap About phone.

4. Read the version of the devise to continue.

For devices with build number LMY47D, software is already up-to-date. Models with other build numbers can only update their devices to LRX22C. Device must have the build number LRX22C and is charged up to 50 percent. The update is only 16.7 MB.

Android 5.1 Lollipop fixes several issues in 5.0, adds new features and brings in unspecified performance and stability improvements. Its three significant new features include dual-SIM support, native HD voice and Device Protection.
