Google must be up to something following its decision to withdraw sales of what is considered to be its "best smartphone device of all time" from stores beginning today. Here's why...
A spokesperson told a news website yesterday that Google's "focus is on the Nexus 6 at this time." Google Store has already removed the old Nexus 5 smartphone from the list of devices and is no longer available for purchase direct from the online store.
Google furthered that "some inventory of Nexus 5 still exists" since its 2014 flagship Android smartphone are available through Google's retail and carrier partners in the U.S. and some other regions across the globe.
A news report in December 2014 first surfaced that the tech titan had discontinued the production of Nexus 5, which means sales will stop once stocks are gone. However, Google did not confirm the news report but never had they belied the same reports that circulated.
Later, Google stressed that Nexus 5 would "continue to be available for sale on Google Play and through select retailers in Q1 2015." Therefore, Nexus 5 will most likely run out of stocks this month.
According to tech analysts, Nexus 5 is a real threat to Nexus 6's sales performance that prospect buyers would opt for its predecessor. Nexus 6 does not sport totally different changes and additions from the Nexus 5.
First released in October 2013, LG-made Nexus 5 boasts a 4.95-inch display with 1080 x 1920 screen resolution protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It has virtually no side bezels. Nexus 5 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chipset, quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU, Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.
Google Play has changed its storefront, separating hardware and digital products. Nexus 5 was displayed along with smartwatches and Chromebooks, and digital products like apps, music and movies. Beginning today, after Nexus 5 was removed, the store has also changed its name and is simply called Google Store.
Nexus 6 is now available at Verizon's website. However, shipping will start on March 18.
